NJ Brazilian Wax – Winter Break?

We know our favorite Jersey gals are devoted Brazilian wax fans all summer long at the Jersey shore.  But when winter arrives – do you still wax or do you take a hiatus?  Many people ask if they should still continue their Brazilian wax appointments over the winter.  There are many reasons why you should continue to wax all year long, but the ultimate decision is up to you.

If your Brazilian wax only serves the sole purpose of keeping your bikini ready all summer long, you may be inclined to break for the winter.  However, many women like to keep up with their Brazilian bikini wax all year long because they enjoy being hair free and silky smooth.  Many women say they feel ‘cleaner’ after their wax, plus you can stay hair free for several weeks.

Another great reason to keep up with your waxing all year long is that the more you wax, the less you will have to.  Sound confusing? Keep this in mind, the more you wax your hair, the less hair that continues to grow back.  Over time, you will notice that less and less hair grows back in area that is subject to repeated waxing.

This is great for the bikini area, not so great for eyebrows.  Have you ever noticed that your eyebrows don’t grow back like they used to? If you used to keep them very thin and now want them fuller, you may not be able to achieve that look after years of waxing.

Damaged follicles eventually will not re-grow hair. So waxing all year long is a great way to help thin out the amount of hair along your bikini line, or anywhere else.

Ultimately the decision is yours.  At ABC Day Spa in Freehold, we have our special spa membership packages and pre-paid spa gift cards that offer you discounted pricing on regular waxing, facial or massage services.  This helps to ensure that you can enjoy your favorite ABC Day Spa services at prices that won’t break your bank!

Don’t Forget Your Best Accessory for the Jersey Shore; A Brazilian Bikini Wax

If you’re heading to the Jersey Shore this summer, you better not forget your Brazilian Bikini Wax.  This sizzling hot beach bod beauty treatment is a must for barely there bikini-wearers.

What is a Brazilian Wax?

Although the term Brazilian wax is commonly used for any waxing that involves removing most of the hair in and around the pubic area, a true Brazilian wax removes most of the hair from the front of the pubic area, the back (yes, your bum) and everything in between.  Sometimes, a ‘landing strip’ is left in the front, but many clients opt to have it all removed.

Unlike a regular bikini wax that only removes pubic hair from the close corners of the inner thigh, a Brazilian leaves absolutely NOTHING to the imagination.

It’s actually popular all year round but Brazilian wax appointments at NJ day spas spike in the summer.  Women love the clean feeling it leaves plus you don’t have to worry about shaving for weeks.  You can throw on your bikini any time and never have to worry about stubble, razor bumps or bikini line hair.

Best Brazilian Bikini Wax in NJ

Some might say ‘no pain, no gain’, but the same doesn’t hold true with the Brazilian wax.  While it can be a little uncomfortable, a good Brazilian wax specialist will perform the procedure quickly, in as little as 15 minutes, with minimal discomfort involved.  If you’re too afraid to try, you’ll never know all of the benefits of a Brazilian bikini wax!

Finding the best Brazilian Wax Expert in NJ

You’ll want to perform a thorough ‘interview’ with your spa before you book your appointment. It’s important to ask questions such as how long has a particular technician been performing the Brazilian wax and is this one of their specialties.  You don’t want just anyone performing this delicate procedure. It can take years of practice to ace the Brazilian, and believe me; a well trained wax expert is definitely worth driving the few extra miles.

Another option is to go off of a referral from a friend or co-worker.  Chances are if this person is satisfied with a particular technician, you will be as well.  You can also perform a Google search for a particular spa or technician and see if any positive reviews were written online.

How to Prepare for A Brazilian Wax

  • Let your hair grow at least ¼ of an inch so the wax can grasp the hair.
  • Do not shave before your appointment.
  • Do not go tanning before getting waxed, this can lead to tears in the skin.
  • Tell your technician of any medications you are on that may make your skin sensitive.
  • Wash thoroughly before your appointment. If you are coming straight from work, use the restroom and clean thoroughly with a baby wipe before getting waxed
  • Some people experience sensitive skin after waxing, you may take Advil an hour before your appointment to help

Post Wax Care for Men in NJ

You’ve just had your body waxed, now what?  Men, like women, are turning to waxing to remove unwanted body hair. But whether it’s your back, chest, arms, or shoulders…what happens during the wax appointment is just as important as what happens after.

Many men in NJ are finally discovering why women wax…hair-free, smooth skin for weeks!  It’s one of the many benefits of male body waxing and NJ spas have been busier than ever catering to the growing clientele of men.

What’s important for men to realize is that waxing requires a little bit of care on their part too.  At the spa, it’s up to your wax professional to safely and carefully perform your male body waxing services.  When you leave, it’s up to you to keep the area clean to ensure the best results possible.

Side Effects of Male Body Waxing

Waxing can sometimes produce serious side effects, especially on sensitive skins and in certain medical conditions.  This is why it is crucial that you ONLY visit a reputable, licensed facility with highly trained wax experts.

In highly sensitive skin types, waxing can cause irritation, minor bleeding and development of pustules.  Less serious side effects of waxing include minor inflammation that goes away within a few hours and ingrown hairs.

More serious side effects can occur at the hand of an untrained professional.  Skin burns may occur if the wax is overly heated.  Individuals with very sensitive skin, or those who are on certain medications that cause skin sensitivity (Retin-A) can experience serious tearing of the skin during waxing. It’s important that your wax professional asks detailed questions about your past and current medical history and prescription medications.

Folliculitis is another side effect of waxing, which is characterized by the inflammation and infection of the hair follicles and may require medical treatment. Using anti-septic to clean the area after waxing can help prevent infections like these from happening.

Waxing is especially not recommended for patients of diabetes or people afflicted by varicose veins, as it can cause serious infections. A trained wax professional will ask these questions or have you complete a thorough intake form before your appointment to ensure your safety.

Waxing cannot be performed on chapped or broken skin, or areas with pimples, moles or rashes. People on certain medications like Retin-A, Renova, Differin or Isotretinoin, should also avoid waxing.

The moral of the story; find a highly trained, highly recommended wax professional that works in a clean, professional and licensed facility.

Men’s Post Wax Care

If you want to ensure the best results from your waxing experience, keep the area clean and free of oils, sweat and dirt for at least 24 hours.  Also stay out of the sun for 24 hours as the skin is very sensitive after waxing and could burn easier.

Wash the area with a gentle soap and pat dry after showering.  If you are susceptible to white heads after waxing, you can use an astringent or cleanser with salicylic acid to treat the area.

If you find your skin is a bit sensitive from the waxing, aloe vera gel works great to sooth redness.

But most importantly, stay out of the sun and only entrust a licensed waxing professional to perform any body or face waxing procedures for you.

NJ Spas Offering Chest Waxing Services for Men

Justin Timberlake may have brought ‘sexy back’ but we are counting on Jersey Shore guys to bring their sexy chest back! Summer has arrived in NJ and it’s time to bare all…or almost ‘all’ depending on which beach you go to. Some men are graced with a smooth chest while others still look like they are wearing their favorite winter sweater. And while all of that dark and lovely hair on your chest certainly does bring out your…uh…eyes(?)…we’d prefer to see your chest smooth and stubble free for summer!

Here is some good information for all of the Jersey Shore guys considering chest waxing services in NJ.

First every man must know that chest waxing for men is very common these days. Not only is chest waxing common, but so is back waxing, neck, arms, eyebrows. You name it…..we do it.

Why Chest Waxing for Men?

It’s simple, waxing is one of the most effective hair removal solutions that offers long-term benefits and smooth skin for weeks. By long term benefits I mean that over a period of time, hair that has been consistently waxed grows back less dense. Yes, you will actually notice a reduction in hair after continued chest waxing services.

Another benefit is that waxing leaves your skin smooth for weeks. Unlike shaving, waxing pulls the hair out from the root, leaving the hair follicle empty. It can take anywhere from 3-4 weeks, and sometimes longer depending on the person, for new hair to begin to re-grow. And when it does, you will notice that the hair that breaks through the surface of the skin is soft, not coarse like it is after shaving.

Most Common Male Body Waxing Procedures

We have a complete menu of male body waxing services, but the most common are as follows:

Male chest waxing is very quick and easy. Men love that the hair does not grow back quickly and that they do not have to shave their chest daily.

It’s Time to Bring Your Sexy Chest Back!

Summer is here and it is very important to start male chest waxing services now. If you are too afraid to try waxing then you will never know all of the wonderful benefits. We hear it all the time…’the results are so worth it because honestly who wants to shave every single day?’

Eyebrow Waxing Safety Tips For Summer In NJ

You have your eyebrows waxed in NJ all year long but did you know when it’s summer at the Jersey Shore you need to take special precautions before and after your professional eyebrow waxing services in NJ?

The NJ summer sun can mean big fun for shore residents and guests.  But sunburns and sun exposure before or after an eyebrow wax can spell disaster for your skin.  Sunburns make your skin more susceptible to injury, especially from hot wax.  Here’s what you need to know to keep your eyebrows looking good all year long, including over summer.

Eyebrow Waxing at the Jersey Shore

It’s important to avoid exposure to the sun at least 48 hours before your scheduled eyebrow wax appointment.  You don’t want to compromise the safety of your skin with a sunburn.  If you are going to be in the sun before an eyebrow wax appointment, be sure to wear sun block on your face and always wear sunglasses.  The skin around the eye area is extremely gentle and thin to begin with, a sunburn in this area would greatly increase the potential of a wax burn or even worse, a tear on your skin from the warm wax.

After your eyebrow waxing in NJ, you’ll also want to protect yourself from sun exposure.  Waxing removes the upper most layer of skin, leaving extra delicate skin exposed.   Again, your skin is much more likely to burn and become injured in the sun after you have been waxed. Follow the same protocol that I outlined for your ‘pre-waxing appointment’.  Wear sunscreen and sunglasses.  You want to protect the delicate skin from being burned.  If you don’t, you could end up with a nasty sunburn.   Freshly waxed skin needs to be protected for at least 24 hours after waxing, but I like to recommend 48 hours to ensure the highest level of protection.

Now that you are armed with the proper information to protect your skin before and after your eyebrow waxing appointments in NJ, go enjoy your summer and we hope to see you soon for your next eyebrow waxing or eyebrow shaping service! Treat Ingrown Hairs from a Brazilian Bikini Wax

Developing ingrown hairs after waxing is uncommon, however, for some people with very coarse, curly or unruly hair—it could happen.

Usually, ingrown hairs develop after shaving, or after tweezing if you break the hair or do not pull it from the root. When you shave, you are actually cutting the hair at the skin’s surface, leaving it with a dull, flat top. New skin cells can grow over the left over hair before it has a chance to grow above the surface again. When this happens, often times the flat top cannot poke through your skin cells, and the hair starts to curl and gets trapped under the skin.

Waxing however is much different. When you wax, you are removing the entire hair from the root. A new, fresh hair grows back with a pointed tip that can easily break through the skin’s surface, reducing the chance for ingrown hairs. However, as I said, if you have very curly hair, there is a chance that the hair will grow and start to curl inwards before making it above the surface of the skin. It can cause scarring, redness and swelling (its medical term is Pseudofolliculitis Barbae or PFB).

Ask the NJ Wax Expert…

Which Products Will Treat Ingrown Hairs?

Hovan’s Gold Medi Cream is the original In-Grown Hair Cream that is guaranteed to clear and prevent unsightly/ painful “bumps” caused by In-Grown Hair on Face, Body, Legs, Bikini Line and Underarm. Bikini Saver Cream “from down under for down under” is also colourless with light fragrance and Tea Tree Oil.

A jar easily lasts for two months if used daily. Only a small amount is needed, the product is concentrated. (0.5oz / 14.2g)

Salicylic acid is another one of the best treatments for ingrown hairs. You can find it in almost any over-the-counter anti-acne treatment. It is a dermatological-grade ingredient that exfoliates, moisturizes, clears pores and can help prevent infection. After waxing, apply a product salicylic acid so it remains on your skin the whole day. Continue to do so for several days after waxing.

If you have ingrown hairs that are causing redness, swelling and pain, they can be carefully removed, by a professional. Consider visiting your trusted skin care professional for help. Using a warm compress and a buffing agent, the technician can gently exfoliate some of the dead skin away which is trapping the ingrown hair. Then, she can gently free the tip of the hair. Do not pluck the hair out until the hair has had a chance to fully grow and all redness and swelling has subsided

Preventing Ingrown Hairs

Ingrown hairs can be prevented through regular exfoliation. Choose a product that is gentle enough for frequent use. Exfoliate any areas where ingrown hairs tend to occur a few times a week. This constant removal of dead skin cells will give your hair a better chance of growing through the surface.

Brazilian Bikini Wax After Care

It’s almost like we have a love-hate relationship with the Brazilian bikini wax.  We love how sexy and clean it makes us feel, but we hate the red bumps and irritation that can develop after waxing.

It’s not too surprising that pulling our hair out from its root with hot wax can irritate our skin, especially in such a delicate area. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand that one!  But what we do need to understand is the best way to treat and soothe the skin after a Brazilian wax.

There are many products on the market that claim to be the best after-wax product.  The fact of the matter is, some of the best ways to be good to your skin after waxing is by using ingredients that you already have in your home.

You don’t have to spend a fortune on high-end post-wax care products.  In my experience, every day items including Aloe Vera, Shae Butter, and Olive Oil work just as well, if not better.

Here are some products that can help pamper your skin after a Brazilian wax:

Aloe Vera gel: There is nothing like the feel of cool Aloe Vera gel to soothe hot and irritated skin. I like to keep mine in the refrigerator. It’s fabulous for freshly waxed skin and is even great to treat sunburns. When purchasing aloe vera gel, choose one that is free of added dyes or fragrances.

Calendula: Calendula is often used in baby products to treat diaper rash. It’s gentle, natural and soothing.   California Baby makes a great Calendula baby cream.

Shea butter is one of the best moisturizers that Mother Earth has to offer.  There are many excellent products that contain Shea Butter, but you can also purchase it raw.  Use it to treat irritated skin as well as an all over moisturizer. Your skin will look radiant!   I love the Shea Butter products from Nature’s Shea Butter.

Baking Soda/Corn Starch Powder:  Many people don’t know that these two products can be applied directly to the skin to sooth irritation and itchiness associated with a Brazilian or bikini wax. Just apply some baking soda mixed with a tiny bit of water to turn it into a paste and apply to your itching skin and bumps.

Any of these products or ingredients will help reduce irritation that may be experienced after the Brazilian waxing. What I like best about using natural products is that you don’t have to worry about other chemicals, additives or preservatives that are added.

Body Waxing for Men: Sugar vs Wax

When it comes to hair removal, it’s hard to say which is ‘better’ for someone.  It really depends on your skin type, desired goals (permanent or short term?) and type of hair.

Regardless of which hair removal is deemed best for your needs, whether you are male or female doesn’t really play a factor in any of the decisions.

I myself have been using wax for more than 2 decades for hair removal.  For me, waxing with the muslin strips is very quick, and the faster the wax comes off, the less pain inflicted on the client.

Waxing for Men

For what it’s worth, sugaring and waxing are very similar in that they both involve applying a sticky substance to the skin and then swiftly removing it, taking lots of hair with it. There are, however, a few differences between sugaring and waxing.  The biggest difference is probably that the sugar substance is never used hot, which can be beneficial for those with very sensitive skin.

I prefer to use wax like I said because of the ability to use the muslin strips to quickly and cleanly pull the wax away.  Very little wax remains on the skin and any leftover residue can be easily removed with baby oil or wax remover.

Both methods can have you smooth and hair free for weeks.

Brazilian Waxing on Plus Sized Women

I have had many plus-sized women confide in me that they are nervous about getting a bikini or Brazilian bikini wax.  They feel uncomfortable because they have perhaps been embarrassed at another place or have heard horror stories from some of their friends.

There is nothing to be ashamed of, we all come in different sizes and shapes.  There is however a potential risk that heavier women should be aware of when it comes to Brazilian bikini waxing.

NJ Brazilian Wax Precautions

The Brazilian wax in general is a very delicate procedure.  The skin in the pubic area is highly sensitive and fragile, for any woman.  With heavier women, the skin can be even more susceptible to wax injuries such as tears to the skin.  Because the skin of a heaver woman is expanded, it is very thin.  Added moisture, which is typically found between creases and skin folds, can also make waxing more dangerous.  Skin tears from waxing can lead to infection, so a woman who is more prone to such incidences must be more selective in choosing a wax professional.

It’s not enough to understand how to perform a Brazilian wax.  One must understand the complexities of different skin types based on many different factors such as medication, illnesses and even weight.

My personal recommendation for your overall comfort and wellbeing would be to get slightly more than a bikini wax.  Not a full, deep Brazilian, but a little more than just the bikini lines.  You want to avoid as much trauma to the skin as possible.  Also, the woman who wrote in said that this would be her first time getting a Brazilian.  So at this point it is safest to test the skin with a smaller wax.  See how the skin responds to the waxing and how comfortable you are over the next few days.  Friction can create discomfort as well, so it’s best to start small and work your way up.

My concerns are always for the health and wellbeing of the client.  Waxing is safe but only when it is performed by an experienced individual.

Learn more about the side effects of Brazilian waxing or read our Brazilian wax blogs.
